Koushinkan is member dojo of the Negishi Ryu Shuriken Jutsu. This system was founded in the late Edo period by Negishi Shorei, at that time the martial arts instructor for Annaka han. He developed it from Ganritsu Ryu shuriken, and his own research and training. It is currently the only koryu (classical Japanese martial art) that specializes in shuriken jutsu. Our dojo charter comes from Hayasaka Yoshifumi, the current Soke (lineage head) of the system in Japan. This system is a samurai art and covers the use of a specific style of purpose made bo shuriken. Eventually these are integrated with various other weapons, primarily the sword.
Training consists of proper reigi (etiquette), basic postures, and the shuriken techniques of the system, eventually including things like striking at various ranges and angles, and while moving, laying down, or from a roll. The need for proper mental focus is a primary element of the practice.
Hayasaka sensei’s teacher, Saito Satoshi sensei, incorporated a number of other systems of shuriken jutsu into the Negishi Ryu, where they are currently taught as cognate disciplines. One of these is Shingetsu Ryu, a civilian (or ninja, depending on who is telling) system passed down to him by Fujita Seiko that specializes in a simple hari, or needle shaped, bo shuriken. At Koushinkan we may introduce students to shuriken jutsu through the basic techniques of Shingetsu Ryu.
