Koushinkan is a non profit martial arts organization dedicated to the practice of Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate Do, Okinawan Kobudo, the Liu family Feeding Crane, and Negishi Ryu Shuriken Jutsu. It was founded (as Kodokan Boston) in 1990. Over the years training has moved from our start in the basement of one of our members to 13 years at Green Street Studios in Cambridge MA, to our own purpose built dojo in Waltham and since the pandemic to a park and a dojo in Burlington MA. The space may change, but our approach to our art(s) has remained consistent. As a non-profit none of our instructors are paid. We teach and train because we love it and hope to share our practice with others.
In our over 35 years in the Boston area we have developed a closely knit dojo community committed to the practice and development of our arts. Our goals in our training are the development of the body, mind, and spirit and the improvement of self defense skills. Working towards these goals means we train in a non-competitive environment; members work not only to improve themselves, but to help other members improve. We do not participate in competitive events, in or outside of the dojo, as we do not feel that competition is in alignment with our goals. We aim to train hard, work together to develop our skills, and enjoy our training.
Our name comes from a saying of Higa Seiko’s: “kokoro wo hiraite, renshuu wo tanoshimu; Open Mind, Joyful Training. That is the way we approach our practice, and each other. If this kind of training, training for adults interested in practicing a classical martial arts system with other serious students, interests you, please contact us, we would like to hear from you.

My dear, Sensei/shift!
I greet you all in the true spirit of martial-arts! I hereby thank you for this kind of training!
I am a Goju-Ryu practitioner,as well as a student of Matayoshi Kobudo and Deng-Feng Beijing Shaolin martial-arts! What I know is that martial-arts practice is a twin brother of environmental conservation,so I am a practitioner of green environmental conservation.
I live in East Africa and I teach in elementary and secondary schools as well as tertiary institutions!
We enjoy karate taijutsu, Kobujitsu and Shaolin martial-arts as well as ecological conservation.
I would like to become a martial-arts family friend!
Regards,
Kiwanuka Moses
