After a break of a few years we are excited to have Liu Chang’I Sifu back in the Boston area! We’ll be doing a weekend seminar, spending time with sifu, and of course doing some closed-door training for dojo members and others with Feeding Crane experience. It will be a fun time, excellent training, and good to see sifu after too long.

This year’s seminar is meant to introduce beginners to Feeding Crane Kung’fu and how the system is trained and to help more experienced practitioners continue to develop their training. It is also meant to introduce participants to a number of concepts and training methods that are core to the system but could easily supplement training in Okinawan karate or other Chinese martial arts.

Morning sessions will focus on the first level of the Ji Ben Gong – the basic movements used to develop the system’s signature Cun Li (inch or “thunder” power), a variety of body conditioning exercises, and drills focusing on the 5 Elements (Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth).

Afternoon sessions will focus on application and techniques, sensitivity training (methods similar to pushing hands, chisao, or kakie), and basic forms. Students may also work on Sanda style exercises.

Sunday sessions will build on the material covered Saturday.

About Feeding Crane And the Instructors

Feeding Crane is part of the Fujian crane (Bai He) family of arts founded originally by Fang Qiniang in the 1600s. It was brought from Fuchow to Taiwan at the start of the 20^th century and has been held within the Liu family ever since. The art emphasizes short range power, rapid attacks to vital areas, and extensive use of close-range bridging and sticking techniques. It has never been modified for competition or public demonstration and in some ways is a time capsule of an earlier approach to Kung Fu training.

The system itself is incredibly rich and comprehensive, covering traditional medicine and chi gong as well as martial practices. While it certainly cannot be covered in a single seminar the weekend should give participants a good introduction to the art and how it is practiced. The methods and concepts taught are also transferable to other arts. In particular, the connections to karate systems like Goju or Uechi Ryu are obvious and can form a fascinating insight into them. Liu Chang’I is the current lineage holder of the system. His technique and power are superb and he is an engaging and insightful instructor, as well as being the definitive voice for the art. He has been visiting and teaching in the Boston area since 2006. He will be assisted by Fred Lohse, chief instructor of the Koushinkan Boston dojo, who has been practicing and teaching the system under Liu sifu for over 20 years. The seminar is kindly hosted by Charles “Chip” Quimby sensei of the Shiseikan dojo, who also has prior experience in Feeding Crane Kung’fu.

Seminar Information

When: Saturday September 26 and Sunday September 27. 10:00AM -3:30 PM. Training starts at 10:00, there is a break for lunch from 12:00 -1:00, training starts again at 1:00 and ends at 3:30. (Lunch is not provided.)

Location: Authentic Karate Training Center, 83 Pine Street, Peabody MA.

Cost:  Before September 1, Saturday only $100.00, 2 days $175.00 After September 1, Saturday only $125.00, 2 days $200.00

Participants: Adults only, Mature Teens with Instructor’s supervision. Maximum participants 40.

Attire: Athletic gear- sweat pants, gi pants, or shorts and a t-shirt. No belts or uniform tops, and no clothing with inappropriate logos or language please. Feel free to bring a water bottle.

On Saturday evening we will have a dinner for participants, and partners/guests. Details to follow.
